Creating PieChart Symbol (How To)

This tutorial shows you how to create a PieChart symbolizer in GeoMedia Smart Client 15.

1 Creating the PieChart symbolizer in StyleEditor

  • Click Libraries on the right hand side.
  • Select an existing library or create a new one.
  • Click Add to create a new symbology within the specified library.
  • Click From Editor if you want to create a new one. If you have already an existing one click Upload and continue at Step 2.
  • Type in a usable name and choose PieChart out of the drop down list of Symbology type.
  • Click Load Editor.
  • Click Piechart in the scale area.
The following screenshot shows you the starting point of the PieChart symbolizer in the StyleEditor:

  • Details to every single possible field can be found here.
  • Change the Geometry Function to Midpoint.
Blue.pngIf you want to use the PieChart symbols for polygonal features, you have to define a Geometry Function, because a chart symbolizer is commonly designed for point features.


  • Change the Width to 300.
  • Change the Height to 200.
  • Click Data chart.png.
  • Type in a Name, which is afterwards visible when we activate Data label.
  • Type in a Value.
Blue.pngIf you want to use databased values you have first click on the database symbol so the button switches from Database inactive.png to Database active.png.


  • Click Edit style.png to change the Fill Fill symbolizer.png.
  • Click on the Color'.
  • Switch to the tab RGB.
  • Type in the field Colorcode:
  • 0097BA Clusterpoint fill.png.
  • Click Data chart.png and repeat the styling of this data.
  • Click Datalabel chart.png.
Blue.pngIf you want to use different colors for your data you also can use Legend Legend chart.png instead of using Data label Datalabel chart.png. This type of piechart is also available on our online demo.


  • Click Save to apply the changes and to save the style.


2 Adjustments in the Smart Client Administrator

  • Switch to the feature list.
  • Select the desired feature for the PieChart symbolizer.
  •  :* Check if the Type: is set to Point.
Blue.pngIf you want to use a polygonal feature for PieChart symbols, then you have to define a Geometry function for it.


  • Switch the tab to Symbols.
  • Edit the current display rule by clicking Edit.png.
  • Choose the corresponding Library and Symbology.
  • Click Save to apply the changes.
  • Assign the feature to the legend. Details can be found here.
  • Click Roles on the right hand side.
  • Select or create the role for whose the PieChart should be used.
  • Switch the tab to Features.
  • Select a Project from the drop down list.
  • Change the Right to Visualize.
Blue.pngIf you want to show tooltips on the PieChart symbol the feature right should be on Activate. Prerequisite: IsLocatable must be checked at your PieChart feature form. How to check this box can be found in the corresponding feature forms at Single Feature.


  • Check the box of your PieChart feature.
  • Click Apply.



3 Result

The following screenshots show the PieChart for some statistical data within the census data of Clark County. The first one shows a PieChart without a Legend Legend chart.png, instead we have used Data Label Datalabel chart.png. The second one shows the same data but with a Legend. The same example can be viewed on our online demo.

Usage of PieCharts in GeoMedia Smart Client Public Maps

The result of this addon tutorial will be a simple BaseMap (Google Terrain) with PieCharts as a live rendered overlay.

2 Adjustments in the Smart Client Administrator.



Adjustments in the Public Maps Administrator

Blue.pngIf you already have a BaseMap and you want just add the HeatMap layer, continue reading after the second break in the list.


  • Switch to Public Maps by clicking Switch admin.png
  • Click New Base and then select Google
  • Type in a Name and choose the Coordinate System.
Blue.pngFor Google and Bing Maps you must have a *.csf with EPSG:3857 previously uploaded in the GeoMedia Smart Client. How to add a coordinate system can be read here.


Blue.pngIf you have already uploaded such a *.csf file it will be automatically selected in this field.


  • Change the Layer type to Terrain.
  • Click Save to apply the changes.


  • Click New Map View.
  • Define a Name and check Is default. At every start of Public Maps, this will be your starting Map View.
  • Select the above defined Base Map.
  • Select the Project from whose you will get the live features.
  • Define 15 as the Zoom level.
  • Click Project Center to get the center of your project in EPSG:3857 coordinates.
  • Click Save to apply the changes.
  • Click Map Views and select the previously defined Map View.


  • Click Add at Features in the most lower part of the form.
  • A modalform shows up and you will get the same treeview as in the legend at the GeoMedia Smart Client.
  • Expand the theme, which contains the PieChart feature.
Blue.pngIf you don't see the feature there, you have to assign the PieChart feature at one of the themes in your specified project.


Blue.pngIf you have more than one live feature and you want the PieChart feature for example in the foreground, you can change the layer order by drag and drop.


  • Click Save to apply the changes.
